Workflow does not complete - error from SHAREPOINT\system

I have a fairly simple workflow - when a checkbox on List A is checked, workflow starts and updates List B with a small subset of List A data.

To help troubleshoot, I placed 3 email notifications in the workflow 1) when process starts, 2) after a variable is set and 3) after list B is updated.  I created this on our Dev system, and after it got working, moved it to Prod.  Fortunately, there are no issues on Prod.  However, I went into Dev to make some minor changes, and now I am getting an error.  I get emauils 1 & 2, but not the one telling me List B is updated.  The workflow status column tells me an error occurred. 

I click on the link and Workflow Status says:   Error Occurred. 

The following events have occurred in this workflow. 
Event Type - Error
User ID - System Account
Description - An error has occurred in List B

If I click on System Account, I see this: Account SHAREPOINT\system  Name System Account 

The big issue is that when I go to Workflow Settings for List A, the Workflow is still running, and repeated runs will just add to the count.

Anybody know how to get around this, or what is causing the problem? Our Admins have the a lot of features disabled, so I can't get to any system settings or even Workflow logs.
